Radiation Therapy Training for The Atomic Energy Council in Uganda

From September 23-27, 2019, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s RSRP conducted a consultation with the Uganda Atomic Energy Council (AEC) related to the oversight of linear accelerators and brachytherapy devices.        Ms. Diana Thompson provided a workshop with the objective of strengthening Uganda’s licensing and inspection of medical facilities that use linear accelerators and high dose-rate remote afterloader brachytherapy devices. The topics covered included:

  • Regulation of Linear Accelerators;
  • Licensing and Registration of Linear Accelerators;
  • Inspection of Linear Accelerator Facilities;
  • Regulation of High Dose-rate Remote Afterloaders and Teletherapy;
  • Licensing of High Dose-rate Remote Afterloaders and Teletherapy;
  • Inspection of High Dose-rate Remote Afterloader and Teletherapy Facilities;
  • Discussions and recommendations on overall improvement of the regulation of the subject facilities;
  • Team Project on updating an inspection checklist for Linear Accelerators; and
  • Development of an action plan for licensing and inspection of the Linear Accelerator Facility.
