From September 16 to September 20, 2019, the US NRC RSRP conducted a consultation at the Peru Institute of Nuclear Energy (IPEN). Mr. John R. Madera, MBA, CNMT, ARRT provided a workshop with information and guidance for inspectors and managers in the Technical Office of the National Authority (OTAN) of IPEN with the objective of strengthening regulation of medical facilities in Peru that treat patients through the use of linear accelerators (LINACs), high dose-rate remote afterloader brachytherapy devices, Cobalt-60 teletherapy units and Gamma Knife units. From September 9-13, 2019, a consultation under the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s RSRP was conducted for the Central African Republic National Radioprotection Agency (ANR) in Bangui, Central African Republic. Rick Muñoz provided information and guidance to the ANR with the objective of strengthening their licensing and inspection of industrial radiographic operations and for inspecting medical facilities. In addition to the information exchange, formal inspections/site visits at a licensed industrial x-ray and hospital facility were conducted.
From September 9-13, 2019, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) provided radiation safety training in the Republic of the Congo. The workshop, which provided important, complimentary support related to the ongoing sources inventory project in the country, covered different aspects of nuclear and radiation safety and security, including the IAEA Code of Conduct. More than 25 participants from different national authorities participated in the activity.
On September 5, 6 and 7, 2019, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) Office of International Programs (OIP), and the USNRC Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. and Haimanot Yilma of USNRC and John Kinneman of AdSTM, Inc. met with the Director General and other officials from the Ethiopian Radiation Protection Authority (ERPA) to discuss the status of the national regulatory program for radiation sources, and ERPA participation in NRC partnership programs.
During September 5-6, 2019, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) Radiation Sources Regulatory Partnership (RSRP) visited Mauritania to upgrade the Advanced Regulatory Information System (ARIS) to its latest version ARIS 3.5 at the National Authority of Radiation, Safety and Nuclear Security (ARSN). RSRP provided training for the upgrade that contains a newly developed module (OCCUDOSE) to manage occupational exposure information. Mauritania will play an important role in testing the new module and providing feedback to further improve the software.
